Really glad this kid recently made it back to midcoast Maine to call the flowers and animals out of their winter resting places! This would be an amazing flower harvesting crew to get to work with. Dream team. If only I knew where to get one of those flutes...

This photo was taken 4 days ago, when ice still covered most of the shady pond here. Though there's still a bit of ice around the edges and it's cloudy and cool outside, today will officially be ice out day 2013! It's so fun to see pond birds returning these past few days; we've spotted great blue herons, two pairs of wood ducks, hooded mergansers, mallards, and a kingfisher all checking out the digs.
Still waiting for warmer weather to arrive and then stick around in order for the flower-growing season to really get going, but there's plenty of seedling work to keep up with in the meantime. Today, I'm also celebrating the first blooming flower of the season here- a tiny blue scilla.
